Science fiction abounds with references to androids, but perhaps the best known example isn't from a novel or film at all; it's the charming little green robot known as BugDroid, which symbolizes the Android platform. Developed with the financial backing of Google, Android is an open-source operating system used for smartphones, tablets, and other electronics devices, including televisions, digital cameras, and even gaming consoles. The platform has taken the technology world by storm, and for good reason. Android lets you access any data you store in Google (contacts, email, documents, media) on all of your Android device and your computer, without you needing to fuss with cables or having to sync them. Android devices allow for easy multitasking, widgets for easy access, and even voice commands. You can also download more applications (commonly called "apps") for your device. The operating system is updated periodically, with each update given a number as well as the delicious code name of an edible treat, such as Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, or Jellybean. Because the platform is open source, all sorts of brands manufacture Android devices, including Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC, Asus and Toshiba. Of course, there's no forgetting all the accessories you can purchase for your new electronics. Look for chargers, stands, and docks for your phones and tablets, plus screen protectors, decorative cases, and much more. You can even get Android T-shirts. Humanity might not be ready for a real android, but who needs one when you've got a smartphone or tablet that puts the world at your fingertips?
