Not many can comandeer a ship. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, is the first installment in a series of adventure films starring Johnny Depp as the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow. The films inspired the Disney amusement park ride of the same name, which is why the premiere of the film was held at Walt Disneyland Resort. Will Turner, a blacksmith played by Orlando Bloom, must join forces with Sparrow in order to save his love, Elizabeth Swan, played by Keira Knightley. Swan has been kidnapped by Geoffrey Rush's character, Captain Barbossa, a former associate of Jack Sparrow. Several unexpected twists and turns happen along their journey to save Elizabeth the delve into the supernatural as well as standard pirate fare such as swordfights and betrayal. Johnny Depp has said that he modeled his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow after the cartoon character of Pepe' LePew and Rolling Stones' Guitarist Keith Richards, who has a cameo as Sparrow's father Captain Teague in the third Pirates film. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise also includes Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Several other notable actors have starred in the films including Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz, Chow Yun Fat, Stellan Skarsgard, and Bill Nighy. The Pirates of the Caribbean films have been nominated for and won several awards including the Oscars, Golden Globes, and MTV Movie Awards.
