The show is based on a graphic novel series of the same name that was written by Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore, and Robert Kirkmann. The show opens with a sheriff awakening from a deep coma to discover that his world is full of zombie-like creatures called walkers. Rick Grimes then sets out to find his family members and on his mission, he comes across many other hardened human survivors. The show premiered in 2010 in Australia on Fox International Channels. The protagonist is played by Andrew Lincoln and stars actors such as Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Jeffrey DeMunn among others. As of 2013, three seasons of the show and 34 episodes have been broadcast. The programme has received a great deal of critical acclaim including several award nominations and wins. It has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Miniseries Movie, or Special Award. Ratings for the show have been very strong. One episode of the show holds the record for the most-viewed drama series broadcast in US basic cable TV history. Bear McCreary composed the theme song to the show. The tune uses a simplistic, repetitive selection of stringed instruments that invokes a frightening feeling in the audience. Shot mostly in the US State of Georgia, David Boyd chooses to shot entirely on 16 mm film. A great deal of merchandise is available for fans of the show including action figures made by McFarlane Toys.
