A wealthy merchant lives in a large manor with his three beautiful daughters. The youngest, twenty-year-old Belle, is lovely and pure of heart unlike her sisters, who are wicked and selfish.
A storm causes the merchant to lose all his wealth but one of his ships escapes damage and going to visit the docks he asks his daughter if they would like any gifts. The oldest two ask for fine dresses...
…and jewels. Belle wants only a rose.
The merchant gets lost in a dark forest and seeks shelter in a dazzling palace. He finds a table laden with food and drink, which seem to have been left for him by the palace's invisible owner.
The merchant accepts the hospitality and spends the night. In the morning he takes a rose from the garden for Belle and is confronted by a hideous Beast who condemns him to die for stealing his most precious possession.
The merchant begs to be set free, saying that he had only picked the rose as a gift for his youngest daughter. The Beast agrees to let him give the rose to Belle, but only if the merchant will return.
The merchant is upset, but accepts his fate. The Beast sends him on his way, with jewels and fine clothes for his daughters, and stresses that Belle must never know about his deal.
The merchant is unable to hide the truth from Belle who goes willingly to the Beast's Castle. The Beast receives her graciously and informs her that she is now mistress of the castle, and he is her servant.
He gives her beautiful clothing and food and lavishes attention on her. Every night, the Beast asks Belle to marry him, only to be refused each time.
Belle dreams of a mysterious handsome prince and eventually becomes homesick and begs the Beast to be allowed to see her family. He gives her a week to see them and she agrees, setting off with an enchanted mirror and ring.
Her older sisters are surprised to find her well and dressed in finery. They are envious when they hear of her happy life at the castle, and beg her to stay another day.
