Black shoes are unavoidable for certain situations -- funerals, black tie events, if you're Johnny Cash -- but they can be rather dull. Of course, the largest percentage of men's shoes out there are going to be black because, let's face it, it's pretty hard to get black wrong. Tom Junod wrote in GQ of his father Lou's wedding day advice not to wear black shoes with a navy suit. (“But Dad, what kind of shoes should you wear?“ “With a navy blue suit? Navy blue shoes.") Somehow I can't quite picture such an outfit... A well-dressed gent can probably get by with owning one or two pairs of black shoes and making them work for all of the above-mentioned occasions, which will then free him up to explore the many other footwear possibilities. Which, honestly, are a lot more interesting and fun.
