) What a stunning lens! I primarily use Canon L lenses because of their quality and this one even puts them in the shade. From the second you connect this to your camera and look through the viewfinder you know you are using a quality lens.
I bought this lens primarily for macro work, but have used this lens for portrait as well and it excels at both, images are sharp, even wide open with only the slightest loss of quality at the extreme edges. The IS is great and certainly saves a couple of stops, but you still need a steady macro subject or the IS works too hard and its effect becomes visible, especially when focus stacking.
This has become my new standard lens, a great piece of equipment, definitely the best of the available choices and well worth the extra $$

) After buying "Canon" quality photographic products since 1984,I had no hesitation in purchasing another.Being a purpose built macro lens,(and far in advance of the canon 50mm macro I had last century,as you would expect),and now with auto-focus,(and also able to be used as a fixed 100mm telephoto lens) I can now get a whole range of macro images I've been after,with amazing clarity and detail,and instantly use it for the 100mm telephoto mode.The auto-focus is super fast and smooth,with little noise.The quality and workmanship is second to none.I cannot think of one thing I don't like about this product and I would not hesitate buying another.
A brilliant all round lens for the intermediate photographer! Awesome!

This lens is extremely sharp and unbelievably durable. It allows you to get very close to the subject and achieve remarkable shots. 10/10.
