Amazon Fire Phone vs. Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung has dominated the smartphone market with the wildly popular Galaxy models. The latest Galaxy phone – the S5 – is no different. Within the first month of the Samsung Galaxy S5’s manufacturing in 2014, approximately 10 million units were snatched up by consumers. Despite the undeniable consumer popularity of the Samsung S5, Amazon has stepped forward and offered up its first smartphone – the Fire Phone. The Fire Phone’s speed and other features are superior to many smartphones currently on the market, but it still comes in second to the Galaxy S5.

The Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is heralded as not just a smartphone, but a super phone. The phone runs with an internal Android 4.4.2 that has a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor that is lightning fast and makes multitasking a breeze. The phone’s 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB of storage can handle an abundance of applications and allow the phone to store a multitude of photos/videos. The Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 2X2 MIMO tech makes connecting to Wi-Fi easy and fast. The S5 has the ability to run both LTE and Wi-FI simultaneously to create data transfer speeds that surpass most other smartphone models.

Display

The Galaxy S5 has a large 5.1-inch display with a Full HD Super AMOLED screen. The phone’s display resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels, with a density of 432 pixels per inch, which creates sharp, bold, flawless images that have vibrant colours.

Camera

The Samsung smartphone has a 16-megapixel camera for taking sharp still pictures and videos. Users can quickly take a series of pictures to capture action shots flawlessly. Each picture can be snapped in less than a second, which makes the camera’s speed superior to most other smartphones. The phone’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature allows the user to lighten or darken a photo with the simple touch of a finger to give each picture the appearance of more natural lighting. The camera’s Selective Focus feature lets the user choose what the camera focuses on and what area of the photo’s background to blur. The S5 also has a front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera.

Heart Rate Monitor

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a built-in heart rate monitor that allows a user to closely monitor his/her heartbeat during a workout. Heart rate can be quickly charted before and after each workout using the phone’s heart application. If the user is interested in nutrition, the phone comes with the S Health application that has on-demand nutrition advice.

Other Features

The S5 also comes with some other features that make the phone a superior choice. The S5 is water and dust resistant, and comes with a cover for the charging port. The S5 can also be programmed to respond only to certain fingerprint swipes for optimal security. Another useful feature is the Ultra Power Saving Mode, which activates when the power level gets low. This mode will turn the screen black and white, and disables non-essential applications to conserve power.

The Amazon Fire Phone

The Amazon Fire Phone has smooth, rounded edges with lightweight glass on both the front and back, which gives it a less sturdy feel than the Samsung S5. The phone gets its power from the Snapdragon 800 chipset, a 2.2GHz CPU, and Adreno 330 GPU, which makes it slower than the S5, but faster than many other smartphones. Generally, the Amazon Fire is considered an entry-level or moderate-user smartphone choice. It offers the basics for smartphone usage, but does not feature the perks of the Samsung S5.

Display

The Amazon Fire Phone’s 4.7-inch display is smaller than that of the Samsung S5. Its resolution is 1280 x 720, which is less crisp and sharp than the S5.

Camera

The camera on the Amazon Fire is more than capable of taking nice photos, but lacks the pixel ratio of the S5. The Amazon Fire has a 13-megapixel camera and an LED flash. The phone’s front-facing camera is 2.1 megapixels. Both cameras shoot 1080p video at 30fps.

Conclusion

Both the S5 and Fire Phone are reliable and high-tech phones, but the Samsung tops the Fire Phone in terms of extra features and specs. Users who are looking for a smartphone with perks such was water resistance and a heart rate monitor should look into the Galaxy S5. For those who want a more basic smartphone with great media capabilities, the Amazon phone is a great choice.
