Ian Henderson.

Born in the UK and studied art at Banbury, Oxford and Swansea Colleges of Art. First artist to a New Town Development Corporation, Skelmersdale in Lancashire. From there awarded a Gulbenkian Fellow in Creative Art (Painting) at Keele University. Lecturer Leeds College of Art.
 
He then travelled to Canada to become first Artist in Residence (Painting) at Brock University, Ontario.  Arrived in Australia in 1972. He has been described as a figure and landscape painter in all media continuing to exhibit his paintings on a regular basis.
 
S/I in visual studies at the University of Newcastle, followed by senior position at the College of Art in Brisbane. In Canberra Chief Graphic Designer for CSIRO, and during this period his paintings were exhibited in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and also in the UK.
 
He returned to the UK between 1985-88 and established his studio, carrying out commissions and exhibiting his paintings at a number of galleries. Returning to Australia appointed as an artist in residence with a consultancy position in visual arts for Brisbane’s South Bank development scheme, and in 1990 he accepted a position at the University of New England in Armidale, NSW as a Senior Lecturer in Visual Art & Design.
 
Major exhibitions of paintings took place in Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane, and in 1993 he gained a Doctorate in Creative Arts (Painting) from the University of Wollongong, NSW. Briefly an Artist in Residence at the famous Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, and his exhibition ‘Unexpected Journeys in Tasmania’ held at the Salamanca Collection in Hobart in 1992 received important and favourable art reviews. Two of his major Tasmanian paintings are held with Burnie Regional Art Gallery, the Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama, USA, and Cowra Regional Art Gallery, NSW.
 
Other acquisitions of his paintings are within several regional and city and regional art galleries in Australia (Stanthorpe, Cowra, Muswellbrook, Taree, Murray Bridge, and within the History Trust of South Australia.) In the UK., Ian Henderson’s paintings appear in a number of publications, and within four or five County illustrated catalogues of the UK Public Catalogue Foundation.
 
He is represented in many private and public collections in the UK, Canada, USA, and Australia. A major exhibition of new work was shown at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery from December 2013–February 2014.
 
He lives and works in Canberra and is currently working on a comprehensive autobiographical memoir involving writing, illustration and painting. The most recent essay ‘Banburians at the Gate' (ISSN 2204-4507) was published in 2015. Ian Henderson’s work is also within the permanent collection of Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive.
