Stamps Australia Online

When searching for a 5/- Green Harbour Bridge you need to be extremely careful as it as become apparent to me that lately some sellers have become slightly clever and dishonest when creating their listings.

This guide has been created as a warning to buyers to beware of sellers listing facsimile copies of 5/- Green Harbour bridge, 1 Pound Blue & Chestnut Kangaroo or 2 Pound Red & Black Kangaroo Australian Stamps.  These copies where created in the 70's for a Philatelic Exhibition they where original created in a mini sheet format in either one of each of the three stamps in a perforated sheet and as a block of four 5/- Green Harbour Bridge stamps in a perforated sheet.

You may be aware that original:

  • 5/- Green Harbour Bride in Very Fined Used (VFU) condition is worth: AU $250

  • 1 Pound Blue & Chestnut Kangaroo in Very Fined Used (VFU) condition is worth: AU $1750 - $2500 (depending on watermark)

  • 2 Pound Red & Black Kangaroo in Very Fined Used (VFU) condition is worth: AU $600 - $3500 (depending on watermark)

You can see from the above figures that these stamps in original condition are worth alot of money, though the facsimile copies are really worth nothing (AU $10 for either mini sheet).  Making it worth while for some sellers to try and pass off a copy as an original as the percentage of profit would be off the rector scale.

Below is an appealing listing I noticed just this week 23/10/2006 Where the seller has removed the 5/- Green Harbour Bridge stamp from the facsimile mini sheet that it was original part of.  The listing does make mention of the 5/- Green Harbour Bridge being a facsimile copy in the description but does not make mention of this in the listings title.  The Seller has the title for this set of bridges as MUH (Mint Un-Hinged) and the 5/- Shilling CTO (Cancel To Order) CTO really just means it has been stamped as all stamps are when used to post letters even when you send mail today.  The other stamps in the set are in fact original and MUH (Mint Un-Hinged) making the set worth around AU $40 retail,  though at the time that i wrote this guide some poor bidder had already taken the price of this set up to $86.99 double the stamps value.

In closing this was writen to help any collector of Australian Stamps from being disappointed, from thinking they have been able to buy a bargain only to be disappointed when they realize that what they have bought is worthless.  I wish sellers would stop selling facsimile stamp copies.  These facsimile copies should only be sold if they are part of the original mini sheet they where designed for and never listed if removed from the mini sheet.  Even better seller should consider giving these stamps away as a bonus to there good customers as i choose to do, not forgetting to add a note when given them away to educate the customer that the stamps are facsimile copies and not the original.
