Blackberry Q10 vs iPhone 5

Choosing a mobile phone is a big task within itself, especially in today’s world where there are countless options available. This article will compare the premium models from two of the top mobile device brands, the Blackberry Q10 and the Apple iPhone 5, both available from eBay. Both have a range of pros and cons, and weighing up what is important will help decide which option is right.

The Blackberry Q10

Blackberry was one of the first companies to get involved in the smartphone market early on, and the Q10 brings back a lot of what made the earlier models so popular. The Q10 was released in January of 2013 and combines the classic QWERTY keyboard with more modern touchscreen technology to give the phone a well rounded usability.

Hardware & Design:

The Q10 sports the portrait QWERTY keyboard, which is a dying feature in many smartphones. However the phone has a great ergonomic design, making it very intuitive and having a great feel. The Q10 has a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core CPU with 2GB of RAM, the same specs as its keyboard-less big brother the Z10. The phone has 16GB of built in storage, with a microSD extension, able to increase the storage to 64GB. The Q10 has a 3.1 inch screen that is a square, this causing some frustrating issues with 16:9 video. However the 720x720 display is a good step up from the previous VGA models, making viewing great from all angles.

The Q10 has two cameras, front and back. The front is a 2 megapixel camera, and there is an 8-megapixel one on the back with an LED flash. Performance of the Q10’s camera is good but not fantastic, the photos lack sharpness but the colours are represented well. The camera does fall short in low-light, and it an are that the Q10 is weak.

Performance & Battery:

With the dual core processor and 2GB of Ram the Q10 does do well in responsiveness and loading. In general the apps work well however the phone falls short on 3D apps, especially high graphics games. For everything except demanding gaming apps the Q10 is more than adequate.

The Q10 has a 2,100mAh battery pack, its small size means a spare can be easily carried around. The battery lasts well, easily getting a user through a full day on a single charge, the phone managing around nine hours and 35 minutes with continual use.
Booting up the phone can be incredibly slow, taking over a minute usually. However apart from this point the Q10 performs pretty well across the board.

The Q10 runs on the Blackberry OS 10 which unfortunately falls short in comparison to other operating systems like Apple and Android. This is mainly due to the lack of available and well working apps that work on the OS, making it fall behind slightly in the smartphone world.

The Apple iPhone 5

Apple has become a top brand name associated with smartphones with their iPhones models dominating the markets. This is due to their usability, performance, software and design. The iPhone 5 builds on the previous models to deliver another great mobile device.

Hardware & Design:

The iPhone 5 builds upon many of the features that were popular with the previous model. They have decreased the weight by 20 percent, which is a huge noticeable difference for the 5S. Apple has also increased the display to a 4-inch, 1,136 x 640 display making it the biggest display for Apple so far. The phone has an all-new aluminum construction, giving it a very sleek design look, and the face is made from glass. Inside, the 5S has a dual core, 1300 MHz processor and 1GB of Ram.

The camera on the iPhone still probably has the best image quality available on a phone. It is an 8 megapixel camera on the back, and a new improved 1.2 mega-pixel on the front capable of capturing 720p video as well. The camera on the iPhone is really one of the standout features, able to capture high quality images as well as HD video and panoramic stills.

Performance & Battery:

The iPhone 5 claimed to double the performance of the 4S, and it did not disappoint. Apps load noticeably faster, images render much quicker and the performance as a whole has improved incredible. The battery life too is a big step up with the iPhone 5 managing 11 hours and 15 minutes with constant use.

The iPhone 5 runs the latest Apple OS, which has some great new features. Overall the iPhone 5 is able to make the most of the software’s new features like navigation and photostream. Apple software has a multitude of apps available on the store too, and the iPhone 5 is able to run them smoothly.

Buying from eBay

Both of these phone models are available from eBay at great competitive prices. Buyers should simply navigate to the mobile phone section of eBay and then use the search bar at the top of the page to find the Q10 or the iPhone 5. The bar on the left of the screen can help narrow down results, and within price range. Using the accessories area of eBay is another great place to pick up some very helpful phone add-ons, from cases to chargers.
