Unfortunately for us Aussies, software is not cheap to purchase from bricks and mortar stores (department stores and computer stores). The mark up is easily double, sometimes more!
Sale times are the only time we might nab a bargain. This is why so many Ebayers buy online, it is so much cheaper. How and why Ebay sellers are able to offer cheaper software is the reason I wrote this guide. I would like buyers minds to be put at ease about what they are getting. Thanks to the very dodgy DVD-burning pirates, people are very wary of software also. But there is no need to be, at least not if you buy from Australian sellers. Their feedback is all you need to look at to see that they are fair dinkum. The more they have sold the more at ease you can be.
When we buy software the traditional way, we get a pretty box and/or what we call a jewel case (the clear plastic cases) or just a DVD-style case. All of them have the pretty pictures we love so much, but at what cost? Why are we paying so much more? I don't know and I think it's quite simply unfair. In the U.S and Canada the market is flooded and the price per item is much, much lower. The more you manufacture, the cheaper your cost per item, it makes perfect sense. If you purchase from North America you are paying a fraction of even the wholesale price in Australia, even when you include the cost of postage and insurance to bring the products here.
How do Aussie Ebay sellers offer such massive price reductions? We buy smarter, that's all. It is much, much cheaper to have posted from North America either a cd-rom in a sleeve or jewel case or DVD case, than the equivalent bulky product in a box. The product itself costs less as you are also not receiving the "full" packaging (which you inevitably throw away - what a waste). There are exceptions to the overall cost if the boxed products are on sale of course, this is how Aussie sellers are able to offer software in all shapes and sizes, to suit everyone's needs and budgets.
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO NOT BEING DISAPPOINTED BY WHAT YOU RECEIVE WHEN YOU BUY SOFTWARE IS TO PLEASE, PLEASE READ THE ITEM DESCRIPTION FULLY and TAKE POSTAGE COSTS INTO ACCOUNT !!!
There is always a packaging section somewhere and it should clearly state what you are getting for your money. If you can't find it, by all means contact the seller PRIOR to purchasing to check.
Most international sellers only sell the cd-rom's in sleeves. They show the fully packaged product (usually in a box) but don't always make it clear you only get the cd in the sleeve unless you read the fine print. They include a LOT of information which might put you off reading through it, but it's important you are certain prior to purchasing.
Software in sleeves is an environmentally-friendly and cost effective alternative you mustn't be scared of. It is not for everyone, for example it doesn't really suit gift-giving, but for most of our needs it is absolutely perfect!
