Buying outdoor furniture. Everything you need to know and more!

Everyone loves to entertain and relax, especially in the outdoors where we can take advantage the Aussie sun and fresh air. Making the right choice when selecting outdoor furniture will ensure you can utilise your extra living space and get the most from your purchase.
Consider how you will use the space
Carefully considering how your outdoor space will be utilised will ensure you make purchases that will benefit your lifestyle for years to come. While some outdoor furniture pieces such as day beds may be highly seductive, consider the use they will get if you are primarily interested in hosting dinner parties in your outdoors. Not a social butterfly but fancy a spot to relax with a book or cuppa?  Perhaps a small wicker outdoor furniture setting or lounge chair is the way to go. Stacking chairs are a fabulous and sensible option to give the option of hosting guests whilst being able to pack them out of sight when not in use.

Careful consideration of what pieces to add to your area will ensure no purchases are left neglected and rarely used in your outdoor sanctuary.
Choose your materials
Always consider the environment and exposure to the elements when selecting materials for your outdoor furniture. Make sure all materials you choose are variable and suited to the space you are furnishing: wooden furniture can age quickly  when left in the sun, rain and wind, unless it's looked after and oiled regularly, while metal, plastic and resin can be a fantastic option for round the pool or out in the open.
Consider if your space is subject to high winds in which case light weight furniture is in danger of being blown away. If this is the case look into heavier furniture, timbers or plastics and wicker outdoor furniture that can be weighted down.
All furniture left in the outdoors will require regular maintenance to ensure it withstands the test of time and can be enjoyed for years. Timber outdoor furniture will need to be cleaned and re-oiled every six months to ensure it maintains its vigour, whilst a protection spray for metal furniture will prevent rust especially necessary in coastal areas.

Whilst outdoor soft furnishings will happily take a beating from the sun and rain, they are not impregnable to the elements. Ensure that any soft furnishings you choose for your outdoor space are made with outdoor waterproof foam to ensure they don’t mould or go crumbly in the sun. Soft furnishings will need to be washed and dried regularly and it is best to keep them under cover and out of the rain on a regular basis.

Follow these simple tips and guidelines to ensure you create a luxurious and practical outdoor space that can be enjoyed for years to come.
