EMERALDS ARE AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE

Fura and Tena are two mountains located in the Colombian towns of Borbur and Muzo, in the state of Boyaca.

The area is recognised as producing the best quality emeralds in the world. In a time long passed, the Muzos indigenous people lived in the area and the Fura and Tena mountains were their gods. The legend says that when the godess Fura saw her husband dying, she cried so hard that her tears transformed into emeralds and were deposited into the mountains that bear their names..

Colour

The most desirable emerald colors are bluish green to pure green, with vivid color saturation and a tone that’s not too dark. The most-prized emeralds are highly transparent. Their color is evenly distributed, with no eye-visible color zoning. The intensity of the green in the finest emeralds is unequaled by anything else in nature.*

Clarity

Emeralds typically contain inclusions that are visible to the naked eye. Trade members and consumers generally accept the presence of inclusions in emeralds. Eye-clean emeralds are especially valuable because they’re so rare.*

Inclusions & Treatments

Colombian emeralds are usually elongated with thin shapes and are called jardines (gardens). Mind the inclusions: stay away from inclusions that look like bubbles and imperfections that look arranged in a specific order. Due to the highly included nature of emeralds, it has become standard practice to treat them with oils and resins to enhance their clarity. Over 99.9% of all emeralds in the market are oil treated, which is an accepted practice among emerald vendors. It is considered unacceptable to use coloured oils or green-tinted oils.

Carat Weight

Emeralds are very rare gemstones and therefore their price can rise dramatically as their size increases. However bigger isn’t always better. It is widely agreed that it is better to buy a smaller emerald with an excellent clarity, rather than a larger * one with several inclusions.
