Every year in Australia, 300 children are killed and 60,000 injured in unintentional accidents (Kidsafe 2000). Use this check list as a starting point for ensuring that your home is a safe haven for your children.



GENERAL SAFETY AROUND THE HOME

  • Have I secure locks on all my doors and windows?
  • Can I keep my child safely out of particular rooms, which could be dangerous using a good quality gate?
  • Are safety plugs fitted in unused power points?
  • Do I have door stops installed on doors to prevent fingers being jammed in doors?
  • Do I have corner cushions positioned on all sharp furniture corners around the house to prevent injury?
  • Have I secured all my cupboards and drawers and ensured that there are no dangerous implements within the reach of a child?
  • Are there barriers or gates on steps, stairs and changes in floor levels to prevent falls?

 

KITCHEN SAFETY

  • Have I positioned all my cleaning chemicals out of reach of children?
  • Have I secured all my cupboards and drawers and ensured there are no dangerous implements, such as knives within reach of a child?
  • Have I moved all medicines out of reach and into a lockable medicine cabinet?
  • Have I locked my refrigerator, or removed all dangerous liquids and food etc from it?
  • Have I moved all long dangling cords out of reach, such as from the kettle
  • Is the high chair in good condition and fitted with a 5 point harness? cupboards and drawers
  • Is there a barrier across the doorway to prevent my child’s access to the kitchen?
  • Do I have outlet covers blocking all power points? Do I have locks on cupboard doors and pantries?
  • Are all cleaning products kept in a locked cupboard?

 

BABY ROOM - THE NURSERY

  • Have I secured all my cupboards and drawers using child safety locks?
  • Is the furniture free of sharp corners or do I need corner cushions?
  • Have I moved all long dangling cords out of reach, such as from a mobile, or lamp etc?
  • Have I moved all baby wipes, talcum powder etc out of reach or locked away?
  • Are curtain cords secured out of reach?

 

BATHROOM AND LAUNDRY SAFETY

  • Is the bath water temperaturealways “tested” before putting the child in?
  • Are medicines and sharp objects, (eg razors), kept in a locked cupboard out of reach of children?
  • Is there a childproof lock on toilet or bathroom door?
  • Can I keep my child safely out of the bathroom using a good quality gate?
  • Have I secured all my cupboards and drawers using child safety locks?
  • Do I have outlet covers blocking all power points?
  • Do the bathroom floor and the bath tub have a non-slip surface?
  • Are all bath taps inaccessible to young children?

 

BEDROOMStested

  • Have I secured all my cupboards and drawers using child safety locks?
  • Have I moved all pills, tablets, any type of vitamins or medications away from reach, preferably into a locked cabinet.
  • Have I moved things such as nail polish, polish remover, perfume and cosmetics out of reach from children? Preferably into a locked cabinet,in the bathroom?
  • Do I have corner cushions positioned on all sharp furniture corners around the house to prevent injury?
  • Have I checked that all cables and cords are out of reach, such as television cords, lamp cords, blind and curtain cords etc?
  • Does a night-light illuminate the bedrooms and hall?
  • Have I locked the dresser and drawers when not in use?
