Complete Guide to 'Call of Duty' Games

Modern video games played on powerful eighth generation consoles are so different from the blocky, pixellated affairs of the 1980s. With graphics and sound being such a large part of first-person shooting games, the genre has gained more than most with games like the iconic "Doom" replaced by wonderfully complex and graphically-intensive games of stunning realism. Chief among these newer first-person shooters is the "Call of Duty" series. Gamers keen to purchase one of the games should learn a little more about the series before diving in.

Platform of choice

Although the first "Call of Duty" game, commonly shortened to CoD, arrived on the PC in 2003, it soon became a revelation and appeared on other platforms. Indeed, sales of the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game soon exceeded those on the PC. All of the best titles are available on all of the most popular home console platforms rather than simply being available to PC or iMac users.

Call of Duty

Released in 2003, "Call of Duty" is a simple first-person shooter based around the popular Quake III gaming engine. The action takes place during World War II, and the player works through three separate campaigns taking the role of an American Army Private, a British Sergeant, and a Soviet Corporal. Critically acclaimed and still enjoyable more than a decade later, the game remains an action classic revered by gamers across the globe.

Call of Duty 2

Also enjoying immense popularity amongst gamers, "Call of Duty 2" was a launch game for the Xbox 360. The title sees the player once again take control of a range of characters fighting against the Nazi menace during World War II. With an improved control system, several multiplayer options, and better graphics than its predecessor, it is easy to see why the game remains popular.

Call of Duty 3

The last of the World War II titles, "Call of Duty 3" is not available on a PC and enjoyed a full console release, including a version for the Nintendo Wii alongside the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A completely revamped control system makes use of more complex controllers, which allows the players to control their character more easily than ever.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" saw the series finally consign World War II to the annals of history and allowed the player to control a modern soldier in the war on terror. It proved a smash hit and sold over 13 million copies with gamers desperate to try the intuitive new control system, modern weaponry, and asymmetric warfare perfectly captured in the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Following the stunning events of the last title, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" sold almost 5 million copies during the first 24 hours of the game's release. The game features a very adult theme with the player often assuming the role of a terrorist, but the formula works and gamers enjoy the tension of the gripping storyline, coupled with the excellent sound and graphics.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Taking a whole new direction, the "Call of Duty: Black Ops" story arc allows the player to control a covert operative on missions for the Secret Service. Spin-offs, "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" and "Ghosts", quickly followed for an engaging trilogy somewhat different to earlier games in the series.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

With stunning graphics and an improved control system, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" features several unique multiplayer options and plenty of downloadable content to ensure it remains on gamers' playlists for years to come. An all-star cast provides excellent voice acting and a gripping storyline keeps the player engaged from start to finish.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Released in the fourth-quarter of 2014, "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" is the most recent title and one of the first available for the Xbox One and PS4. It is set in a grim and wonderfully rendered futuristic environment with the player communicating with a holographic projection for the very first time.
