One of the biggest problems on Ebay at the moment is people overcharging on postage both worldwide and within Australia. This guide is designed to help you understand about actual postage and handling costs to help you determine what is fair.

Most sellers of ebay are genuine, honest and fair. However, even the ebay orchard has some bad apples, unscrupulous sellers who make their profits of excessive postage and handling charges. This makes the market place unfair for honest sellers and unsuspecting buyers. While ebay management are doing their best to crack down on these sellers it is up to you to be smart about what you are buying.

The first thing to do is carefully read the item description and payment and postage terms.

Then you need to ask yourself these questions-

Does the postage cost sound reasonable?

Will my item be sent in a timely and secure manner?

What is the sellers feedback rating?

If I win my item at my highest bid price plus postage is it worthwhile to buy online?

How much is registered or insured post?

Does the postage cost sound reasonable?

If you are buying a mp3 player and the postage within Australia via registered mail is $50 you are probably getting ripped off. This is because the item is small, even if it comes in a box. And basic registered post only costs $2.50.

If you suspect that the item you are interested in has excessive postage write to the seller and ask for the dimensions and weight of the packed item. Then go to the Australia post website and use the postage calculator to work out the actual cost. If the price you get is not within $5 of the price they are charging it is probably an excessive cost.

Will my item be sent in a timely and secure manner?

Find out how the seller will be posting your item. Some Australian options include Australia Post, courier, EMS. Some international options include international airmail, surface mail, courier such as EMS, FedEx, UPS. Courier prices start at $30 and go up but take only 3-7 days. Airmail is determined by weight and dimensions and many countries have international postage calculators on their post sites such as USPS in the USA. Surface mail can take months and is often only slightly cheaper than airmail.

Check to see what sort of handling time the seller has and if it is being posted locally or internationally. If it is international it could two or more weeks to arrive. International post does cost more than local post.

What is the sellers feedback rating?

The best indication of an honest seller is positive feedback. If other buyers are commenting on excessive postage, slow handling time or dodgy products I would suggest you look else ware. Be wary of sellers with low feedback scores as this often indicates less ebay experience.

If I win my item at my highest bid price plus postage is it worthwhile to buy online?

If you win an item for $10 but have to pay $70 in postage then the total cost to you is $80. For some items it may be cheaper just getting it from your local shop. Always consider the postage cost when working out how much you want to bid. Also remember that if an item does not show up, or is not as described and you want a refund most sellers will not refund the cost of postage. Using the example above, this means you would only get a refund of $10, not the $80 you paid.

How much is registered or insured post?

Always ask for registered or insured postage. Basic registered post only costs you $2.50 but will cover up to $100. If your item gets lost or broken in the mail most buyers will not replace it if you do not get insurance.

The most important thing to do when bidding is use your common sense. There are some fantastic bargains on ebay but there are also people out there trying to rip you off. If you have concerns about the postage cost of an item then DON’T BID. You are better being safe than sorry.
