What does Gold Filled mean?

An important point for gold buyers to keep in mind when they purchase items is the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated. Gold-filled jewellery is not as valuable as solid gold, but it is of a higher quality than gold-plated jewellery.

Gold filled jewellery is made by taking one or more sheets of solid gold (14K, 12K, 18K, etc) and wrapping them around a base metal under intense pressure.
Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant.  It does not fade, rub off or turn colours, because its base metal is sheets of solid gold. This type of jewellery is an economical alternative to solid gold!

Will Gold Plated Jewellery fade?

Gold-plated jewellery does not fade. Instead, the layer of gold that is plated over another metal eventually wears off, exposing the underlying metal.

The amount of time it takes the gold plating to wear off is dependent on the jewellery, the type of plating, and how it’s worn.
First, the thickness of the plating . Thicker plating layers last longer. Standard gold plating is usually about 0.5 micron to 1 micron plating that lasts a long time depending on how the jewellery is maintained.

Secondly, the type of jewellery and how it is worn will affect the length of time before the gold plate begins to wear off .  For example, in general a gold-plated ring will wear off its plating much more quickly than a pendant that is plated. A piece of jewellery always worn next to the skin will wear off sooner than one worn over clothing.
