Woody Allen is one of the most interesting and entertaining film directors of all time. He seems to put out a new movie every 18 months and although it could be argued that in recent years the quality of his movies have diminished, I believe he still has a few tricks in the bag.
The following list comprises my all-time favourite Woody Allen movies.
Annie Hall - its hard to go past this all-time classic starring Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. Some of Woody's best lines are in this movie, which follows the rocky relationship between the two key protaganists from New York to Los Angeles.
Broadway Danny Rose - For my money Broadway Danny Rose is Woody Allen's greatest comic achievement. A sadly overlooked film that will have you rolling on the floor in laughter. The movie centres around b-rate talent manager Danny Rose in his efforts to keep his roster of talentless stars in business.
Crimes & Misdemeanours - Arguably Woody's one true great serious movie. Martin Landau and Angelica Houston's performances are breath taking. Over his career Woody has made a number of serious films, most of them have left me cold but I love this one.
Bullets Over Broadway - In the early 90s Woody Allen returned to form with this outstanding movie about a mafia hit man with a natural talent for screenwriting. Dianne Wiest and Chazzz Palminteri sparkle in a very funny, very well written and beautifully shot film.
Woody Allen has made over 40 movies so forgive me if I have missed your favourite. Other Allen films which I believe deserve an honourable mention include: Manhattan, Sleeper, Hannah & Her Sisters and Radio Days.
