Hand knitting is great fun, creative, relaxing and productive as well.  I have knitted all my life, as a child, as a new mother for my own children and now in the evenings in front of the TV.  I would advise all parents to teach their children how to knit.  Simple squares (sew together to make a rug) or a scarf are the easiest for new knitters.  Teacher plain stitch first, then get onto purl and more difficult stitches.  There is a wonderful array of new wools and yarns available today as well as plenty of easy patterns.  Go onto the internet to search for how to knit instructions patterns etc.  Most communities have a good local wool or craft shop full of helpful knitters.  Join a local hand knitting club or guild to meet other knitters in your area. Most have regular meet and knit groups.  I now only knit for my own business and can only just keep up with the orders.  Have a look at what I knit in my ebay store CHILLDESIGNS
