Pokemon Base Set General Info

~~The very oldest and most original Pokemon TCG trading cards started out in Japan asポケットモンスター (Pocket Monsters) in 1996; October 20th.

Eventually these Pokemon cards we're reprinted and made there way to America, and the rest of the world within 1999-2000; after the Gameboy games were released in English; and we're hugely popular alongside the cartoon.

So how many variants of the Pokemon Base set cards were printed?

~~Now this is why we are here... to look at how many variants of the base set were actually printed pre 2001!

Short answer: 23!!!

There are twenty three (23) different original and licensed Pokemon base set variants to my belief!! In various languages.

Here is my complete list of licensed Wizards of the Coast printed Base set; all 23 variants:

1. ENGLISH - Base Set - 1st edition (thick)
2. ENGLISH - Base Set - 1st edition (thin) [please note that 17-102 we're not printed thin]
3. ENGLISH - Base Set - Shadowless
4. ENGLISH - Base Set - Unlimited
5. ENGLISH - Base Set - Unlimited dated years 1999-2000 4th and final print run
6. JAPANESE - Base Set - Normal
7. JAPANESE - Base Set - Non Rarity symbol
8. Korean - Base Set - 1st edition
9. Korean - Base Set - Unlimited
10. Chinese - Base Set - 1st edition
11. Chinese - Base Set - Unlimited
12. Dutch - Base Set- 1st edition
13. Dutch - Base Set - Unlimited
14. Spanish - Base Set - 1st edition
15. Spanish - Base Set - Unlimited
16. Portuguese - Base Set - 1st edition
17. Portuguese - Base Set - Unlimited
18. German - Base Set - 1st Edition
19. German - Base Set - Unlimited
20. Italian - Base Set - 1st Edition
21. Italian - Base Set - Unlimited
22. French - Base Set - 1st Edition
23. French - Base Set - Unlimited

Alongside this, there are a few error cards, like the Vulpix, and Wartortle errors, these would technically count as another variant of those singular base set cards printed. There are rumored Polish cards as well.. but I don't think these exist.

Anyways, that is my list, give us a like if you felt it was helpful! If you want more information on the sets, variations, aesthetics, looks, and how to distinguish fakes, just PM me. (:

All in all if you want to truly complete your base set cards; GOOD LUCK COLLECTING ALL 23 LICENSED VARIANTS!! <3 IT IS A MASSIVE TASK!!!
