How to Make Fairy Wings

From Tinker Bell to the mythical faeries of Anglo-Saxon lore, fairies are a beautiful, rich source of imaginative play for many little girls. From putting on wings during playtime to dressing as pretty fairies for costume parties, when girls have personalised fairy wings, imagination knows no bounds. Making fairy wings also saves parents money on expensive premade costumes and props, allowing creative crafters to design a look that is unique to each individual "fairy".

Wired fairy wings

Most of the commercial fairy wings available use wire and gauzy cloth. Reproducing that look is probably one of the most popular ways to make fairy wings which look store-bought. With only the following materials, fairy wings are made in no time:

  • Four wire hangers or 12-guage wire
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Four coloured or patterned stockings
  • Wide ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Embellishments such as flowers, rhinestones, and ribbons

Gather all the materials together and make sure to have a large, workable surface for the project. From there, it is time to let imaginations run wild with unique ideas.

Forming fairy wings

To begin, unwind the wire hangers, if using them, and then shape the wire into two top and two bottom fairy wing pieces using the pliers. The upper wings should have a larger, elongated shape as compared to the lower wings which are generally smaller and shorter. Cut the wire or hanger as needed to make these shapes.

Attach the wings

Once all four pieces are complete, connect the wings together by placing all four pieces in position so that they slightly overlap. Secure all four pieces together using additional wire, though string and duct tape are viable alternatives.

Cover the wires

Once secure, it is time to add fairy style to the wings beginning with the stocking fabric. Carefully feed the toe of each stocking onto each wire and stretch it up towards the centre. Trim the top of the stocking to a desired length before grabbing the ends and tying them securely over the centre area where the wires joined; simply repeat this step for each wing.

Decorate the wings

Once each wire is covered, it is time to add ribbons and decorations to the wings. The ribbons are used to secure the wings on the person wearing them so it is important to cut two, equal lengths long enough to loop around the wings and secure around the wearer's shoulder. Tie each ribbon around the middle of the wings securely with the knots facing inward. Another option is to use a hot glue gun to secure the knots even further. Finally, it is time to add any embellishments to the wing bodies themselves.

Cardboard fairy wings

Though not nearly as common, cardboard and coffee filters are a great alternative to more complex crafting methods for fairy wings. Using plain white coffee filters, it is possible to create a very ethereal, almost angelic wing which is also easy to decorate with paint, markers, or other dazzling embellishments. The materials needed for this project are simple and do not require much effort to obtain.

  • Two large sheets of cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Felt – enough to cover the cardboard
  • Mod Podge
  • Coffee filters – make sure that an ample amount is present;100 or more just to be safe
  • Ribbon
  • Embellishments (optional)

To begin, draw the desired wing shape, both on the upper and lower, freehand, onto one piece of cardboard. Cut the wing out and use it as a template to trace the other wings onto the other sheet of cardboard and the two sheets of felt. Add a tab of approximately 5 cm by 5 cm in length to the centre of the second wing.

Apply the coffee filters

Finally, attach the coffee filters to the front half of the body. Fold the coffee filters into a tent shape. Then, working from the bottom, use the hot glue gun to attach the peak of each tent onto the wings. Overlap the hanging part of the filters to fill out the look, being careful not to leave any gaps. Once complete, glue ribbons to the centre tab and decorate as desired.
