How to Use the Nespresso

There's just something about the perfectly brewed cup of espresso. Some of us like it as a shot; others enjoy saving a long pour. One thing most of us can agree on, though, is that leaving the office or home to find that perfect cup is far from convenient. Thanks to the good folks at Nespresso, brewing espresso at home has just gotten a whole lot easier and a whole lot more delicious. After mastering a few simple steps, anyone can brew like a professional barista. eBay is a convenient, one-stop shop when it comes to Nespresso, from the machine to the coffee capsules, and even the perfect mug with which to enjoy it.

Preparing to Use the Nespresso

Before putting a brand new Nespresso into use, it is important to prepare the machine for operation. The very first step is to fill the water reservoir completely, turn on the machine, and place a cup or container beneath the coffee output spigot. After half of the water has run through, switch off the machine and use the remaining heated water to rinse the Nespresso's steam and hot water attachments. If the purchase did not come with operating instructions, these are available online from Nespresso's website.

About the Nespresso

Nespresso machines use the brand's exclusive pre-measured, single-use coffee capsules to brew espresso. As their name implies, Nespresso machines differ from the more commonly available single serving brew coffeemakers in that they brew espresso, not just coffee. Nespresso models, products of longstanding and trusted food service company Nestlé Purina, are widely available under the brand names of Krups, Magimix, Turmix, and Delonghi, amongst others.

Nespresso capsule cups are available from the company's stores and website, as well as respected department stores, kitchen shops, and online suppliers such as eBay. Twenty-one Grand Cru varieties are available, each made from Arabica and robusta beans. In addition, the company releases two limited edition capsules each year, along with flavoured espresso capsules known as Variations.

Of course, the Limited Edition changes each year; and in 2013, the Variations Club Favourite is Cioccorosso. Within each Nespresso single-serve capsule is 5 to 6 grams of ground coffee, ready for high-quality espresso brewing. Standard brewing produces a 40 millilitre espresso shot; the long-pour option, however, delivers 110 millilitres of the high-grade java. In Australia, PodCafe makes a refillable, one-size-fits-all capsule for Nespresso machines, the use of which brings down the single-serving cost considerably.

How to Use the Nespresso

The quality of espresso brewed at home using the Nespresso sets it apart from other in-home models. Thanks to the genius of the machine's design, Nespresso users get a consistently exceptional espresso shot or long pour every single time. Although the machine is not difficult to use, it is nonetheless a different procedure from the standard coffeemaker, which requires a grinder, filter, water reservoir, and specific pot. The addition of a steam and hot water nozzle extends the Nespresso's reach into coffee drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, and more. Nespresso models also include a high-pressure pump, a long-lasting stainless steel heating element, and an internal thermostat to ensure a piping hot cup with every brew.

As with machine set-up, filling the tank with water is the first step. Next, the machine must be on and warmed up, a process that takes approximately 30 seconds; once the yellow light disappears, the machine is ready for use. To keep the espresso from cooling too quickly after it brews, rinse the mug with hot water from the steam nozzle before placing it under the output. Aside from tasting the finished product, the next step, the selection of the capsule, is often the most exciting step. At this time, espresso connoisseurs choose which type of coffee they want to enjoy. Will it be Intenso, Espresso, Pure Origin, Lungo, or Decaffeinato? Or is a flavoured Variation or Limited Edition on the menu today?

The capsule slides into the holder, where it secures with a twist. After pouring out the warming water from the cup, the home barista should place the cup beneath the capsule holder; and then push the main switch to the right to force hot water through the coffee capsule. After achieving the desired strength, push the switch left to stop the water flow. Any time after the machine has finished brewing, the used coffee capsule may be removed and discarded. To clean the empty capsule holder, run it under the tap until any residue is removed.
