New Picture Frame....u can repaint to any color.

To start with buy a picture frame, either new or recycled, but make sure it has good glass with no scratches and the back hardboard piece is held in with those little tabs that bend to remove glass and backing.

The frame should be reasonably thick to except small thin hinges and jewelry latches. Lift tabs and remove glass and hardboard. Replace glass and bend tabs back straight. Now you have the lid....to easy( see photo no 3 )...You can add foam door seal strips under glass for even a better snug fit.

Hinges and latches need to be small and any hardware shop has these. Use polished brass as this looks nice and is easy to work with.

Hinge to base

The base can be simple pine pieces at least  1 cm thick and  3.5  cm to 4 cm wide. Butt join and use the top frame to measure the size......staple and glue together and then 2 thin bullet head brads to each end while glue is wet ( use P.V.A glue for everything as this sets clear and does not melt the base foam sheet.)

The next 3 photos show the foam sheet, the raw pine strut sides, the cardboard back etc.  Once you have this altogether and hinges fitted plus latch you can add a strip of door sealing foam(sticky back, comes in rolls to seal around doors, perfect!) to the top frame and this will seal the whole display case airtight. Cover foam with felt of your choice(white or cream is the best for display purpose) and this glues into place with P.V.A glue used sparingly. Add a few hanging hooks, loops etc  and you are ready to go. Once insects are pinned in position add a few moth balls to the base of the case to deter any unwanted mites, museum beetle larva etc.)
Stiff 3 ply cardbaord for final backing(cut with sharp Stanley knife)

You can stain the pine with Mahagony stain or any color but the Mahogany does look great. Just sand the pine down and paint stain on.
