If you have not opened the plastic wrap, look at the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), look at the silver thread that contains red letters.
FAKE: the red letters will read CNDARO repeated over and over again with no clear indication which letter is the first one.
GENUINE: the red letters will read "Microsoft" and "Our Passion" on top of each other.
If you have opened the plastic wrap but have not installed the software, look at the hologram CD. The fake one will look cheap and the finish is not neat. Furthermore, the fake one, on the inner mirror band of the data side, the hologram does not go all the way 360 deg, but only 180 deg.
If you have installed the software, just validate it on http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/whyvalidate.aspx?displaylang=en and it will tell you whether your product key is valid or not.
