UPF ~30+ Fabric

We designed a  Kubby to keep the rain, wind, dirt, hail, and sun off of your treasure .  The chosen fabric is light weight, waterproof (more on that elsewhere) and it also keeps   more than 96.7% of harmful UV radiation from damaging the paint, plastic, upholstery, seals, and rubber on your vehicle.  And in the Dove Gray fabric, it also reflects the sun and minimizes heat retention which is another enemy of vehicle longevity.

According to recent testing by  Consumer Reports, UPF ~30 is typical for protective fabrics, while UPF ~6 is typical for standard summer fabrics - so we have truly "hit the mark" on this one!

What is UPF?

A relatively new rating designation for sun protective textiles is the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). UPF represents the ratio of harmful (sunburn-causing) UV radiation measured without and with the protection of the fabric. For example, a fabric rated UPF 30 means that, if 30 units of UV fall on the fabric, only 1 unit will pass through to the object below. A UPF 30 fabric that blocks 29 out of 30 units of UV is therefore blocking 96.7%. UPF is new and relatable to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measurements. While SPF traditionally use human sunburn testing, UPF is measured using a laboratory instrument (spectrophotometer or spectroradiometer) and an artificial light source, and then applying a sunburn weighting curve (erythemal action spectrum) across the relevant UV wavelengths.

UPF Rating               Protection Category                   % UV radiation Blocked
UPF 15 – 24                         Good                                                    93.3 – 95.9
UPF 25 – 39                       Very Good                                               96.0 – 97.4
UPF 40 – 50+                     Excellent                                                  97.5 – 98+
