KGV Heads from coil machines.

Few realise that the KGV head series from 1/2d (Halfpenny) and later to 2d (Twopence) were available from coil machines which were located in busy area's such as train stations etc.

The coils were made up from regular sheet stamps and hence all the listed varieties occur, the stamps would be joined using selvedge so proving they are genuine coils is sadly, impossible.

There is a way of identifying a coil stamp and although it isn't foolproof if you are aware of your stamps origins then look for pointed perforation tips at top and bottom, these are caused when pulling the stamp from the coil machine hence stretching the perfs, for vertical pair stamps on paper check for a join before removing from paper.
