MAKITA BL1815 (1.5)Ah AND BL1830 (3.0)Ah  18 Volt BATTERIES EXPLAINED

Hi there,

I get a lot of people asking us about makita batteries and the main thing i get asked is will my current battery fit this new tool i`m looking at buying ? So hopefully this will answer your questions and help someone out.

So here`s the basic`s,

MAKITA MAKE DIFFERENT BATTERIES FOR THE 18 VOLT LXT LI-ION TOOL RANGE,

  • BL1815  -  A SLIM, LIGHT WEIGHT COMPACT 1.5Ah BATTERY

  • BL1830  -  A LARGER, FULL SIZED, 3.0AH BATTERY

The first thing people assume is that because the BL1815 looks like its just a smaller version of the BL1830 that it will fit all the 18V LXT tools.
This is not correct the two batteries are different and BL1815 does not fit a lot of the 18 volt tools that makita makes.  This is simply because a 1.5ah battery in one of the bigger tools, will discharge very quickly and overheat too easily.
When batteries discharge they get hot.  When they discharge really fast they get really hot.
Heat is the ultimate enemy of a li-ion battery, the more times you get it too hot the less charges it will accept before failing.
It`s difficult not to discharge the 1.5ah battery really quickly since it has such a small capacity, so not over heating them is a challenge and they tend not to last very long.
The BL1830 battery on the other hand will fit all the tools in the 18 volt range and this is the battery i recommend to people since it operates every tool and has the largest capacity.

To put it simply the BL1815 is a light duty battery designed to make some of the smaller tools a bit easier to use and reduce the total weight of the tool for more precise or overhead work where a lighter tool will be an advantage.  It couldn`t operate the bigger tools for long even if it did fit simply because heat would cause it to fail quickly as it will be regularly overheated.
Yes i`ve heard all about removing the lug to make it fit the bigger tools.  I highly recommend unless you want to be forking out for new compact batteries in a very short time, that you do not do that.  You will reduce the life of the battery dramatically.

The BL1815 batteries only fit the smaller tools, such as the,
 Small impact drivers (eg, BTD141, 140 & 142),
 Lighter drills (eg, BHP452, BDF452, BDF453)
And things like the torch`s, worklights (BML184 & BML185), the BMR100 radio, BUB182 blower and other smaller lighter load tools basically.
The BL1815 battery will not fit or operate any of the high load & more demanding tools, such as
BSS611 circular saw, BGA452 angle grinder, BHR241 & BHR202 rotary hammer drills, BTW450 impact wrench, BHP454 hammer drill, BJR182 re-cip saw, etc, etc.  Basically all the larger tools that most people look to buy use the BL1830.

If your buying new batteries, then i`d be going with the BL1830 even if you have a tool that can use a BL1815.
At the end of the day the bigger battery will allow you to expand your kit if you ever want to without having to buy more batteries and will make any tool better to use, giving it a much better run-time and a little more up and go.

I`ve made a short list with most of the more common LXT 18v makita tools and which battery suits.
This information is from makita operating manuals from tools we stock and includes most of the more common tools but not all.

  • BMR100  RADIO

  • BCL180   VACUUM

  •   Note:  i`ve noticed that a particular seller on ebay blatantly lies (hint they have "sydney" in their name) and claims that the BHP452 only operates on a 1.5ah battery, this is aimed at getting people to buy the BHP454.  The claims they make are absolute rubbish and a very lame sales tactic.
BHP452 is released in kits right across the world including all of the U.S.A. By makita with 3.0ah batteries.
        Eg : lxt407, lxt601,lxt702 7 piece kits, lxt902, lxt1200, lxt1500, lxt211,  3.0ah batteries and BHP452 included.....The proof is right there.
For some reason they only sell them in aus with 1.5`s most of the time and never tell customers that the compact batteries arn`t really for day to day trade work and don`t fit all the other tools.  Bad sales service right there.  I get a lot of customers that tell me these things and they are annoyed with the place they brought them from for not giving them all the right info in the first place.

I hope that helps to clarify things for someone out there and stops you from making a mistake, thanks for taking the time to check it out, and please
