Nickel Metal Hydride

Nickel metal hydride batteries are much lighter then sealed lead acid batteries, and they are also quicker to charge. NiMH batteries are significantly less expensive to produce, in comparison to lithium ion batteries. 

Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries are beneficial for motorised bikes because of their light weight. Their comparatively light weight is due to fewer cells being needed to maintain an adequate charge. In addition to holding an adequate charge, lithium ion batteries are also able to recharge quickly. A motorised bike's battery supply can be replenished multiple times over the course of a ride. Over time, however, the capacity of a lithium ion battery to  hold a charge diminishes. Another disadvantage of lithium ion batteries is that they have higher production costs, which causes them to be higher in price than SLA or NiMH batteries.

Lithium Polymer

Lithium polymer batteries have all of the same benefits as lithium ion batteries, and are more stable under a variety of different conditions. For example, lithium polymer batteries have proven to be the safest. While lithium polymer batteries have the most advantages over the other three other types of batteries for motorised bikes, they also tend to be more costly. Typically, lithium polymer are the most expensive batteries for motorised bikes, because they provide the greatest quality and are more expensive to produce.

Factors that Determine the Range of Motorised Bikes

Three factors that determine the range of motorised bikes include battery size, terrain, and efficiency of the motor drive system. Generally speaking, a bike with a larger battery can travel further. A battery for a bike is comparable to fuel for a car. As the fuel or battery drains, it eventually stops operating. As with a car, a motorised bike cannot travel as far if it is climbing hills as opposed to.driving on flat land.

The motor drive system plays an important role in determining how far a motorised bike can travel. For example, two different motor drive systems, such as an optibike motorised bottom bracket and a hub motor, play a dramatic role in determining the distance a motorised bike can travel. A bike with an optibike system can climb further, in comparison to a bike with a hub motor, even with the same size battery. 

Size of Battery

In a motorised bike, energy is more important than power. Power is what causes the motorised bike to accelerate, whereas energy keeps the biking moving over a specific distance. The size of a battery is measured in watt-hours. Sometimes the size of the battery is displayed in terms of amp-hours, but this does not provide a complete picture, because it does not include the voltage of the battery pack. The standardised way to compare batteries is in terms of watt-hours. If the description of the battery is in amp-hours, simply multiply by its volts, and the result is its watt-hours.
