After paying for a vcheck (www.checkitout.com.au) - which really seems to be a QLD based site. I found that you can actually check out the history of a car via the RTA website for free. I accidently stumbled upon this service so I decided to write an eBay guide to help others. It tells you the following information on a car:

Registration status.
Registration expiry date.
Registration restrictions that may apply.
Who the compulsory third party insurer is.

If the vehicle is written off or stolen.

Number of names the vehicle is registered under.
Number of registered operators in the past 12 months.

To use this service go to the RTA website and follow the links to myRecords. Once you login (with a current NSW drivers license) you click on Vehicle details to access this service. You will need the vehicles registration number and the last four digits of the VIN.

So now you can check the vehicles history, along with a REVS check and a good inspection, you'll be happy with your new purchase. Good luck!
