How to protect your babies eyes from the sun

Babies’ eyes are more sensitive to sun exposure than adults are. They need protection from the potentially harmful effects of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. Their pupils are wider and their ocular tissues  contain less pigment and as such are clearer and allow more light to enter the retina.

According to the Eyecare Trust, a Charity which dedicates itself to raising awareness of eye health across the UK, up to 70% more UV light reaches the retina of children than an adult eye. And 80% of a lifetime UV is absorbed before a child hits his/ her 18th birthday.

Damage caused by exposure to the sun is cumulative and therefore protection needs to begin as early as possible. If a child exceed its threshold, it is more likely that it will suffer eye problems in later life

A  hat or cap with a wide brim can help to  shield your baby’s eyes from the sun but sunglasses offer the highest level of protection. Baby and toddler size sunglasses, with maximum UV protection and impact resistant lenses, are what you need to look for.

Avoid cute toy sunglasses, which may provide limited or no sun protection. Look for a label stating that at least 99% UVA and UVB blockage is provided

It can be difficult trying to find these suitable sunglasses for babies and children.  Many sunglasses are too large and can slip off easily.  You need sunglasses that have a strap that can hold the glasses tight on the baby's head.
The best baby sunglasses that meet all the criteria are made by  Baby Banz.  Adventure Banz and Kidz Banz feature a silicone nose and brow piece embedded in the polycarbonate frame for added comfort for the little ones.  They have a  wrap-around neoprene strap with Velcro adjustment to keep glasses in place. Baby Banz are 100% UVA/UVB protective.
Adventure Banz are for ages 0-2 and kidz banz are for ages 2-5.  Babybanz come in a wide variety of styles which are available from my ebay store
