Rolex Buying Guide

Owning a Rolex has become a status symbol. The watch is considered a luxury item by many, but a Rolex is far more. A Rolex timepiece has been built with chronometric precision to always provide the wearer with an accurate time. A Rolex does not lose its value; the older a Rolex is, the more its value climbs. This makes them a popular collectible item.

Modern Collections

Rolex has three contemporary wristwatch collection lines - the Professional, Cellini, and Oyster collections.

Professional

Throughout the years Rolex has produced a variety of styles and collections to meet a diverse array of needs. The Professional collection was first manufactured in the 1950s with business professionals in mind. Rolex eventually came to expand the line out of the office and customise it to fit the needs of many professionals. They hold the distinction of being the first company to ever invent a waterproof watch. With the design of the Rolex waterproof case, Rolex took steps to design a diver’s watch. The first diver’s Rolex watch could withstand water pressure up to a depth of 100 m. Rolex didn’t stop at manufacturing watches for business men and deep sea divers, and soon expanded the market to include other adventure sports models such as climbing and aviation models. Now the professional collection of Rolex is comprised of nine adventure models - the Cosmograph Daytona, the Explorer, the Deepsea, the Submariner, the Explorer II, the Milgauss, the GMT Master II, the Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

Watches in the Rolex Oyster Perpetual line are made of gold or platinum. The line is made up of four models - the
Day-Date, the Day-Date II, the Datejust, and the Datejust II. Each one has its own unique look and basic, day-to-day usable features. All watches in this line are waterproof and feature self-winding movement. The word ‘perpetual’ in the watch line’s name depicts the unique ability of the Rolex watch to utilise its built-in perpetual rotor to power the watch with each movement of the wearer’s wrist.

Cellini Collection of Rolex

The Cellini Collection of Rolex watches was designed in memory of historic goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellino. The collection focuses on visual appeal, and many of the watches in the line boast white gold and diamonds. They are also feature hand-wound movement. Each of the watches in the line also have a date display. One of the models in the Cellini line, the Prince, requires hand winding like the watches of bygone days.

Rolex for Women

Rolex hasn’t forgotten ladies when manufacturing watches. The Rolex Oyster Lady Collection features female-oriented versions of the the timepieces. They also have a Cellini Cellisima model, which features white gold and diamonds, for women.
Each of the Rolex watches for women are manufactured with the bone structure of a woman taken into consideration. The watch faces measure 36 mm to complement a woman’s smaller wrist. The bracelets in the female line are also made of lightweight materials, and each one has a distinctly feminine edge to it.

Importance of Serial Numbers

When purchasing a Rolex watch, the buyer should always be familiar with the importance of serial numbers on a Rolex watch. The watch’s serial number can be located between the watch’s lugs and the 12 o’clock position, or inside the watch’s cover. The serial number contains the watch’s date of manufacture followed by numbers. A buyer can authenticate the watch via the serial number on an appropriate authentication site.

Buying a Rolex on eBay

A buyer can look on eBay for a large selection of Rolex watches. They should have a general idea of the type of Rolex they want and the year of its model. The buyer can enter the general information about the Rolex they are seeking in the search bar. Once they hit enter, a wide selection of watches that meet the search criteria will appear. Prior to making such a major purchase, the buyer should always look closely at the seller’s history with eBay, and read the feedback that has been left by previous buyers who have dealt with the seller. If the seller has acceptable feedback, the buyer can usually feel somewhat confident in placing a bid or opting to purchase the watch through eBay’s “Buy it Now” option. Prior to purchasing or bidding on the watch, the buyer should never hesitate to ask the seller a wide array of questions to help guarantee that they are truly bidding on the Rolex watch they want.

Conclusion

The buyer should always be sure that they truly want a Rolex, and they should familiarise themselves with the appearance of the various timepieces throughout the years. They may want to purchase a vintage Rolex, or opt to buy a new one.
