***TOP 9*** eBay Items for 1st Yr DOCTORs / HMOs!!

Like if this Guide is helpful
Starring down the barrel at the start of your FIRST job, FIRST unit, FIRST day, FIRST patient?!?
Well here are some great eBay deals that will hopefully make that transition all that much easier!!

Cheers!!   Dr Harry Mac (MBBS (Hons.), ACEM, B.Sc(ScSchProg.), Grad.Dip.Ed(Sec.)
(ROCK ON JUNIOR PEEPS......Best TOOL you can have.....and it's FREE......Is the Humility to ASK FOR HELP!!  We've all been there, and no matter how GRUMPY the response maybe don't worry, deep down NONE of us have forgotten our TRIAL of FIRSTS!!)

LITTMANN CARDIOLOGY III STETHOSCOPE

BEST VALUE STETHOSCOPE!!  Spend a little more but there's no need to go TOP of the range unless you're a Cardiology Specialist!  Littmann Cardiology III provides a DUAL diaphragm, so you can't auscultate with the bell (minor loss), but you effectivley have an ADULT and PEDI Stethoscope in one, no need to carry or buy multiple stethoscopes, especially if you are in an mixed Adult/Pedi ED!!
This is what I use, in a busy ED who can differentiate between Diaphragm and Bell sounds???? I mean REALLY!!

MEDICAL REFERENCE CARDS

GREAT  when you're on the fly!!  We all have to wear a NAME badge so pin a few of these cards on too.  These cards are ED/Emergency orientated but you can get them for JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!!  From important values to remember from the finer points of Biochemistry to DRSABCD!!

PEN TORCH (+ PUPIL GAUGE)

All sorts of FUNKY colours and CHEAP, match your outfit everyday!!
Don't just get a TORCH from Officeworks, get a PROFESSIONAL penlight with PUPIL GAUGE.

'DOCTOR' LANYARD (Only one on eBay unless you prefer Dr Who!)

No matter what LANYARD you end up using MAKE SURE it has an EMERGENCY BREAK AWAY clip in the middle of the loop around your neck!!
Being STRANGLED is not a good first impression!!

SCRUB TOP

Check with your hospital but many shifts in ED or OVERNIGHT COVER can be managed with much more comfort in a Scrub top!!
You can borrow hospital scrubs (No washing, quick change when you get vomitted on), but no two pairs fit the same.
Some hospital EDs have TEAM SCRUBS!
Much easier to SLEEP in!
(A NOTE on sleeping: Clip PAGER to SHIRT near EAR, SLEEP with EAR resting on PAGER....this way you don't need to fear missing a page....it will wake you like a defib!.....so you will actually sleep not toss turn & worry, or worse pass out and miss a page!!)

OXFORD HANDBOOK OF CLINICAL MEDICINE

Whilst first line you will have your bosses or computer resources (Up-To-Date & Theraiputic-Guidelines are FANTASTIC!), as far as the OLD FASHIONED written text BACK TO BASIC GOLD STANDARD goes this is the INTERN BIBLE!!

OXFORD HANDBOOK OF CLINICAL SPECIALTIES

THE BIBLE PART 2!!
The SPECIALTIES version of the a fore mentioned.
GOLD STANDARD, BACK to BASICS, REFRESHER on the fly!!

SHOES - SNEAKERS when you can, or ORTHOTICS.

Something that DOES NOT immediately pop up as MEDICAL EQUIPMENT!!
BELIEVE ME your PLANTAR FASCIA will be thanking you after the first shift.......or try running in heels or fashion shoes if you like.....you will soon LEARN my young ones!! LOL

SAFETY GLASSES

Not only ESSENTIAL these may SAVE YOUR LIFE!!
Often however they are FEW and FAR between, the risk then is that you will 'JUST WING IT' this time and end up with a SPLASH injury!
BUY YOUR OWN, KEEP THEM ON YOU, WEAR THEM A OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!!
Speakings as someone who has lived through a 20min EMERGENCY EYE WASHOUT, and the indignity of having to TRIAGE myself at ED to get checked out, fill in forms, test the patient for INFECTIOUS diseases etc, etc.....
           I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS INVESTMENT!!!
