1.What does the term THREAD COUNT (TC) means?
Ans . Thread count is a term used to describe the number of threads woven horizontally and vertically in a specific area of the fabric. In Australia the thread counts is measured per 10cm² of the fabric area.
2.How does the Thread count effect the quality?
Ans . Thread count is one of the major factors that determines the quality of the finished product. There are many sellers on Ebay and online who claims their product to have a higher thread count but in reality they have been counting the threads in a larger area than 10cm².
FOR EXAMPLE – 400 Thread count per 10cm² sheet is being sold as 1000 Thread count sheet by simply counting the threads in a larger area of 5X5cm(25cm²).
A LINOMA 1000 Thread count per 10cm² range will have 2500 thread count in a larger area of 25cm².So if you’re in the market to buy a luxurious true 1000 TC sheet set always remember to ask the area in which the thread count is measured.
3.What other factors determine the quality of a fabric?
Ans . As we stated earlier the thread count is one of the factors determining the quality of the fabric. Other factors are Yarn size, Fiber Quality and Finishing.
Yarn size - The fineness of each yarn is what the term yarn size refers to - the higher the yarn size, the finer the yarn. The finer the yarn the better the final product is. We use the finest yarns with the best quality.
Fiber Quality - 100% Egyptian Cotton is the most popular cotton used in bedding as it has long fibres and creates stronger and finer yarns.
Finishing - After the cotton yarns are woven into a fabric, the fabric needs to be finished. At LINOMA all of our bed linen goes through different processes like Mercerising ,Singeing and including Anti-bacterial wash to create a better product.
Single ply or Multiple ply yarns – A singly ply yarn is one long thread of cotton where as multiple ply yarn is 2 or more threads twisted together for the purpose of increasing the thread count.
For example – A 250 Thread count made with a 2 ply construction is being sold as a 500 thread count sheet.
So always ask the seller if the sheets are Single ply or multiple ply.
4.Why do new cotton sheets feel stiff?
Ans. The hand or feel of the sheets created of Egyptian cotton is a bit harder than other cottons when the bedding is new. However, with every single laundering, the cotton sheets from Egyptian fibres become softer and softer. Do not be alarmed if when you first receive your new Egyptian cotton sheets, that they feel a little stiff or scratchy, this will all change with a few washings.
