What is Ultraviolet (UV)

No I am not talking about DVDs that glow in the dark when a black light is shone on them.
What I am referring to is the new way to access , watch and collect your movies.  This digital movie service is now finally live in Australia, after operating overseas since 2011.
It provides you with access to your own cloud-based digital rights library of selected movies that you've bought on DVD or Blu-ray.  These digital rights are accessed via Redemption Codes (proofs-of-purchase certificates) that in turn allow you to stream and download licensed movies to multiple platforms and devices.
The rights also allow you to share access to your library with up to 5 additional people, and 12 different devices, with up to three simultaneous streams.

How it Works

The company "UltraViolet" manages all the digital rights for you, but not the content itself.  Your Ultraviolet account keeps track of your entire library.  So it doesn't matter which store you brought your movie, all your Ultraviolet codes are stored at this one central location, and you only  need to register your Ultraviolet code once at any portal. For example if you registered the code for the DVD version of Interstellar at Roadshow Ultraviolet, then later you created a Flixter account and link that account with your Ultraviolet log-in, Interstellar will be also be available via your Flixter "Owned Movies" section.

Build a UV Collection

After buying your UV DVD or Blu-ray, check inside to find your Ultraviolet Redemption Code on the included Insert.
1.  Visit the Ultraviolet Portal listed (eg for Transcendence go to Roadshow Ultraviolet and register or open your existing account.  Registration is quick and easy, and not too much of a pain .
2.  Enter the Redemption Code
3.  Select your Redemption Portal.   These currently include Flixster, JB HiFi Now Video, Ezyflix and Sony.
When you sign up for these services, be sure to link your existing UltraViolet™ account. If you don’t have an existing UltraViolet™ account, you’ll be given the steps to create a new account quickly and easily.

How Do I watch

Once you have redeemed code on the insert, your movie will then be addedto the your UltraViolet account.  UltraViolet now knows that you own that title and will make the movie available to you 24/7 via streaming on your PC, Mac, Android, iPhone, iPad or iOS device or download to store via Apple and Android apps for offline viewing.
Note: Streaming UltraViolet movies and TV shows requires a high-speed Internet connection, content requires constant access and quality may vary due to your connection speed.
After you have bought your UV DVD or Blu-ray and added it to your library, there are no additional costs to download or stream it from your library (however you may incur Bandwidth charges from your ISP ) .  You can watch them as many times as you like at no extra cost, as you would with a DVD or Blu-ray.

Issues With Ultraviolet

1. Confusing setup
Registration is required for 2 accounts, once with Ultraviolet itself and again with the Retailer/ Studio operated sites that may also require registration, which can cause confusion on first use.
2. Bonus Content Not Included
Normally the bonus content that comes with most DVDs and Blu-rays is not included with the Ultraviolet copy.
3.  Use By Date
Redemption sheet codes have an expiry date, and may not be available after this date.
4. Restrictions on Portability
It is not currently possible to download an UltraViolet file and copy it to another device, such as a smartphone or tablet.
4. Requirement for Third Party Apps
You must use a third party app to watch movies on portable devices.
5. Range of Ultraviolet Movies
The number of movies is still somewhat limited and some Studios in particular MGM and Disney are not making their movies available via Ultraviolet
