About Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels. Blood pressure values are universally stated in millimetres of mercury (mm Hg).

The blood has several variable parameters that can be measured, however your average blood pressure monitor can provide readings on;

  • The systolic pressure This is defined as the peak pressure in the arteries during the cardiac cycle (this is the highest value that is featured at the top of readings).
  • Diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure (at the resting phase of the cardiac cycle).
  • Pulse rate which is measured in beats per minute (BPM) and reflects the total number of times the heart muscles contract over a time period.

In the majority of cases it is the accepted that the normal ideal blood pressure values for a resting, healthy adult are approximately 120 mm Hg systolic and 80 mm Hg diastolic often written 120/80 mm Hg and said to be 120 over 80. Blood pressure readings vary thought out the day and this is normal.

Many factors influence blood pressure readings including on a daily and hourly basis.

• Stress

• Activity

• Nutritional factors

• Drugs

• Disease or Infections

• Trauma

• Other Iatrogenic or psychological factors

Measuring Non invasive measurements of blood pressure is now standard practice in both medical clinics, hospitals and homes. Originally blood pressure equipment required training for application, however with the emergence of digital devices, taking blood pressure is now a relatively painless and simple exercise.

The following is a guide to the recommended method of taking blood pressure using an electronic monitor.

• Patients should be seated for at least 5 minutes in a relaxed state, without talking and with minimal movement.

• All tight clothing on the arms should be removed

• The appropriate size cuff should be applied to the correct arm as specified in the devices manual.

• Ensure the cuff markings line up with the brachial artery correctly.

• Patients arm with attached cuff should be supported at the level of the heart.

• Remain in a relaxed state and begin the monitor’s inflation. For consistency try to replicate the readings’ conditions and environment as well as the time of day when ever possible. All blood pressure monitors have the potential to provide reading variations. The readings provided by monitors are guides and diagnosis should be performed by a qualified physician.

Normal values of blood pressure Normal ranges for blood pressure in adult humans generally fall in the ranges of:

• Systolic between 90 and 135 mm Hg

• Diastolic between 50 and 90 mm Hg In children the observed normal ranges are lower; in the elderly, they are often higher, this is generally due to reduced flexibility of the arteries.
