Annales Ecclesiastici Auctore Caesare Baronio S Orano Congregationis Oratorii Presbytero

By Caesare Baronio [Baronius] and Odorico Raynaldo Tarvisinc

1593-1677 - Rome -  Congreg. Oratorii

14" by 10"

Nineteen volumes of these scarce ecclesiatical annals, published over the course of nearly a century.

Containing volumes IV-XX, and parts one and two of volume XXI.

They were first published between 1588 and 1607 as a response to the Lutheran Historia Ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ) in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church represented the Antichrist and had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church.

Long before Baronius was appointed Librarian of the Vatican in 1597, he had access to material and sources in its archives that were previously unpublished or unused. He used these in the development of his work. Accordingly, Annales Ecclesiastici is considered by most as extremely useful and complete. The eminent historian Lord Acton called it "the greatest history of the Church ever written."

He began writing this account of the Church after nearly thirty years of lecturing at Santa Maria in Vallicella. In the Annales he treats history in strict chronological order and keeps theology in the background.

In Latin.

The later volumes are a further continuation of the work started by Baronius, by Odorico Raynaldo Tarvisinc.

With engraved title pages to each volume, and decorative head and tail pieces.

Nineteen volumes of twenty-three only (volumes I, II and III are absent).

In vellum bindings with handwritten spine labels. Externally rubbed, with some marks. Some worming to the vellum on six of the volumes. Wear to the spines of eight volumes. Hinges strained, with cords visible, although some have been repaired with cloth tape. Internally, firmly bound. Monastic bookplates and library labels to front pastedowns. Institutional ink stamps throughout. Some ink annotations, particularly to the first few pages. Some worming to the first few pages of volumes XV, XVI, and XVII, not affecting the text. Tidemarks to seven volumes, with some mould to volumes XIX and XX. Pages are bright, but with some scattered spotting throughout. Overall: GOOD.
