Alphabet Story of Famous Cities Told In Rhymes and Jingles by Horace C Fry

Philadelphia: National Publishing Company, (1905).  Copyright date of 1905 on the title page.  Large hardcover measuring 9 by 11.5 inches and composed of [66] pp.  Bound in red, illustrated cloth with children dressed in red and white and blue.  Illustrated throughout in three tone and black and white.  Illustrated endpapers.  Likely second printing with the first in 1900.  Illustrations signed variously by: Jessie McDermott, J.G. Francis, E.B. Williams, Boz (Morgan J. Sweeney), H.A.P, J.C.S. (Jessie Curtis Shepherd?), R. & E. Taylor, and Hop (Livingston Hopkins?).

The first twenty six pages feature short poems with the color illustrations concerning American cities.  The poem for R, "Lee tried to hold old Richmond town.  But Grant appeared and the flag came down", and for G: "On Gettysburg field with much blood-shed and pain the Yankees drove southward the Confederates again."  Not all poems relate to the Civil War.

Following the alphabet poems are nursery rhymes including Jack and Jill, Tommy Tucker, a lengthy Little Mary had a Lamb and others, all lavishly illustrated.

In Fair condition. Cloth is well worn with the boards peeking through, worn as well at the heel of the spine.  Water exposure has stained the right hand side of the covers and the final 16 pages show a tide mark along the right hand side.  No mildew or smell, the book must have dried properly.  Front and rear hinge are split, but holding.  Gift inscription on the front endpaper dated 1907.

Fine: As new or almost so. Very Good: A nice copy with no major defects, but less than fine. Good: A tolerable copy with defects which will be noted in description. Poor: Perhaps still serviceable as a reading copy, but no longer a thing of beauty. Defects will be noted in the description.
