The Rise of Railroads in the Connecticut River Valley by Thelma M Kistler

Northampton, MA: Department of History of Smith College, 1938.  Volume XXIII No.s 1-4 of the Smith College Studies in History.  Hardcover, likely bound by a previous owner, as I believe the issue was originally bound in wraps.  The book measures 6 by 9 inches and is composed of 289 pp. with an extensive index.  Map frontispiece shows principal railroads of New England, 1860.  No other illustrations in the book.

Kistler's doctoral dissertation.  Chapters include:

  • Connecticut Valley Transportation Before the Railroad
  • The Era of Railroad Construction in New England
  • The Role of Distributing Centers
  • Competition for the Routes of Railroads
  • Problems of Finance
  • Establishing Through Lines
  • Railroads as Competitors for Traffic
  • and many others

Quite scarce in commerce.  Numerous holdings showing in World Catalog, but the majority of the holdings are of digital copies.

In Very Good condition.  Covers with just a hint of wear to the corners.  Binding is solid, former owner's name in pencil on the title page, contents otherwise clean and free of damage.
