Restored 1982 Honda XR500, suitable for Vintage Motocross
The Motorsport Retro team restored this bike in 2012 to compete in the Heaven VMX series (NSW).
Motorsport Retro is an online Magazine celebrating motorsport and we built this as a project bike.
It was a no expense spared rebuild to restore this one owner from new bike to its former glory.
The bike has only been entered and raced into three events in 2 years and its time for a new project.
What we did:
Full strip down
Powder coat frame, swing arm and triple clamps
All new nuts and bolts
Top end engine rebuild ( carried out by experienced workshop)
New aftermarket plastic kit (original tank - we refurbished that best we could)
Fork re-chrome and rebuild
Rear shock rebuild and new spring
New bearings all round
New front and rear brake pads
New seat foam and period correct cover
Custom Ducati carbon exhaust
Carby rebuild with new internals and gaskets
New clutch and brake cables
Near new tyres
New front and rear sprockets
Gearbox rebuild - first and second and third gear replaced and appropriate dog rings.
The bike has been ridden since these photos, and just shows the usual scuff marks and a bit of rust here and there. It is race ready and eligible for pre 1985 VMX. It always starts, makes a wonderful noise and stops and steers wonderfully well for a 30 + year old bike. This bike can also be registered.
We did not restore or replace the wheels and these don't look fantastic, but they are pretty much round. The rear brake lever has a little extension on the tip to get it in the right place. It is not that pretty, but it works.
