BRAID HINTS AND TIPS :
 
The main advantages and disadvantages of braid,
* very small diameter compared to nylon line, a traditional nylon line with a diameter of 0.40mm would have a breaking strain of only a few of pounds.
 
* braid being very limp has no memory, i.e. does not coil like nylon line line when on the spool of the reel, this coiling of nylon line robs you of casting distance.
 
* Being such a small diameter gives you the opportunity  to put much more line on your spool, or using a smaller reel with less line (braid). The braid should fill the spool to give you better casting distance and accuracy. Don't over fill the spool though, about 3mm below the spool lip should be fine, if you fill the spool completely it will tend to spill off causing tangles.
 
* A disadvantage of braid is it's low abrasion resistance to rocks and such. A way to overcome this and still retain the braid's excellent casting ability is to use a fluorocarbon or nylon shock leader, the shock leader should be around 1 1/2 times the length of your rod, or long enough to have 5 coils of the leader on your reel when in the casting position. This shock leader takes all the rough and tumble of the sea bed keeping your braid in pristine condition. The shock leader also takes all the shock generated by the casting action. Just keep an eye on your leader for abrasions etc. and replace when necessary. The shock leader can also save you from a nasty cut on the casting finger from the braid.
 
Finally, wind your braid firmly onto your reel, this will prevent "dig ins". A dig in is where the braid digs in deeply below the surface of the braid already on the reel, sometimes causing tangles during the cast.
