Synopsis/Review ...
Jake lives with his parents in a holiday hideaway hotel - the hotel's main
attraction is that it is a "kid-free" zone. When a couple from a
magazine arrive to do a feature on the hotel, Jake must keep out of the way to
ensure they have a great kid-free time. But things don't go according to plan.
In brief …..
The kitchen was a mess.
Packets and jars had been flung around. Half the stuff in the fridge was on the
floor. There was a trail of flour running through the passage.
For a second Jake thought
one of the magazine people must have had an urge to make a cake and decided to
do it in their room.
Or was someone else in the
house?
Jake's an only kid. He's the
only kid in his family. He's the only kid on his island. Or that's what he
thinks . . .
Review Jake is a lonely boy, living as the only child (so
he thinks) on a remote antipodean island, with just his faithful teddy-bear
Crusher for a friend. In an effort to help his parents attract tourists to the
ramshackle guest-house which they run, he comes up with a couple of amorous and
inquisitive journalists who, to cut a long story short, eventually offer to buy
the hotel with enough money for the family to leave the island and start up
again on the mainland. But Jake's loneliness and despondency also succeed in
conjuring up two sisters from the island's past, Gwen and Mabel, who belong to
another age when the boarding-house was a home for orphans and unwanted
children, and witnessed dreadful acts of cruelty. As usual with the
irrepressible Morris Gleitzman, it's the humour and crazy ideas that keep the
story cracking along, bouncing energetically from one hilarious scene to the
next. This is an enchanting look at a slice of the adult world through the eyes
of a curious and often confused 11-year-old. Ages 9-12 (Kirkus UK)
