Coin Grading Information

Coin grading is a subjective science and the information below must only be used as a guide.

It is provided for those collectors old or new who are not familiar with either system.

There are two accepted methods of grading a coins condition

 The Adjectival coin grading system. This system uses adjectives to describe a coins condition.

  The Sheldon 70 point scale. This system uses numbers from 1 - 70 to describe a coins condition.

Both systems are used to grade coins depending on wear, damage, quality of strike, luster, contact marks,edge knocks, eye appeal, hairline scratches, toning etc etc

The Sheldon 70 point scale uses numbers to do this whilst the Adjectival system will use “words” to describe the same attributes.

Below is the Adjectival description & its approximate Sheldon numeric equivelant. 

Very Good = VG-8           Fine = F-12          Very Fine = VF-20          Good Very Fine = VF-30

Extremely Fine = EF-40           Good Extremely Fine = EF-45          Almost/About Uncirculated = AU-50, AU55 & AU-58.

Uncirculated = MS-60, 61 & 62          Choice Uncirculated = MS-63 & MS-64          Gem Uncirculated = MS-65 + FDC = MS-70

Choice & Gem Uncirculated / MS 63 and above will be in the top percentile of any commercial strike.
