Amazing Old Ceremonial Mask, Mbunda People, Zambia

This very large and rare mask is a spectacular piece. It is hand carved from wood with a darkened weathered and worn patina showing some scuffing marks and evidence of use.  It was collected in 2003 and measures 47 x 40 x 13cm. and is supplied with stand (see pictures).

The Mbunda people settled in western Zambia after migrating from Angola. Their masks are characterized by slanted eyes surrounded by multiple lids and a rectangular mouth which exposes the teeth. Two types of mask have been carved and can be distinguished due to their size. Of the first and larger type, approximately ten examples are known to exist. Called the Sachango Masaka, it represents the founder of the Mbunda people and is worn by boys at the end of their three to six month initiation period that culminates in the Mukanda circumcision ceremony. The second type of mask, called Malamprevo, is smaller and symbolizes an imaginary pretty girl. It has a less sacred function and is worn during initiation and circumcision ceremonies, as well as for entertainment festivities.
This Mbunda mask, called d Sachango Masaka, has typical exaggerated features and was. probab]y used during boys' initiations. Based on field research conducted in Zambia in 1982, it has been attributed to the Mbunda tribe
