An ancient Celtic silver billon stater minted by the Durotriges tribe. Dating to the Late Iron Age, approximately 1st Centuy B.C. - 1st Century A.D.
Tthe obverse with the devolved head of Apollo.
The reverse with disjointed horse.
Coin production began in Britain around the end of the second century B.C. making this example one of the first coins to be minted in the British isles.
The Durotriges were a powerful tribe, possesing some of the most famous hillforts, such as; Maiden Castle, Hod Hill, and South Cadbury Castle and were one of the two main tribes to bear arms against Vespasian and his mighty second Legion.
Although very Celtic artistically, the depictions are derived from the earlier gold staters of Greek Macedonian King Philip II, which depicted a head of Apollo on the obverse and a chariot on the reverse. Thus, Apollo's hair became the focus for the Celtic die engravers and the chariot became a single, abstract horse.
Diameter: 18 mm.
