A GORGEOUS fabric! This wonderful textile is an late 18th or early 19th century Ikat , the French call Flamme ~ this textile is a very rare find , wonderful dark indigo! The tones are still so beautifully saturated, this panel would have been used for a very short period of time~ this lovely hand woven fabric is in superb condition , which is something very very rarely found in these Ikat pieces! This piece is hand-woven using both linen and cotton. There is a lovely brown toned linen warp thread and the remaining fibers are cotton. Lovely medium weight ~ This piece was most likely part of a larger textile and was removed and tucked away,which is why it has survived in such substantial condition. There is the original homespun hemp trim at the top edge of the back for hanging and 5 inches from the top of the panel it is pieced with the most stunning hand stitched hem that runs the width ~ a gorgeous gorgeous and rare find ~*~ ~ . Stunning condition! Only a few tiny pin holes visible when held to the light ~ It is in as found unwashed condition with light storage dust~ . ( piece 92)

An Ikat fabric is woven using a very complicated dyeing technique. The dyes are applied to the yarns prior to weaving which will create designs on the finished fabric. Depending on the pattern, specific areas of the warp and/or weft threads are are protected from dye to prevent them from absorbing color. When the threads are dyed, each thread will have different color pattern along its length. When the threads are ready for weaving, it is very important to line each thread up perfectly on the loom. The warp thread is first to be set on to the loom, and then one must keep all threads in position very carefully to achieve the desired pattern in the final weaving of the textile. There is natural movement in these threads, which give an slightly feathered, or blurred look to the final textile. Ikat textiles are labor intensive, and wonderful heirloom treasures
