Art Deco Danish Dana stainless steel cutlery set for 6 people

  

 

 

 

This elegant set is in very good condition.

The pieces are marked to the back Dana DFA Rustfrit Staal Denmark or DFA Rustfrit Staal. DFA stands for Danish Forsølvningsanstalt Kobenhavn. They are a medium weight and of good quality. There are 6 dinner forks, 6 entree forks, 6 dessert spoons, 6 tablespoons or continental soup spoons, 6 cake forks, 2 small cold meat forks and a large serving spoon. There are 33 pieces. I would date this piece to around 1930-1940, with the exception of the two meat forks which would be a later make.

All have fine scratches from use but it can be seen from the photos how good the finish is. A few dinner forks have some more noticeable scratches to the backs of the tines. The large serving spoon has the most scratches. The bowls to the spoons appear to have a brushed finish while other pieces are glossy. The dessert spoons, soup spoons and entree forks are in near new condition. The little cold meat forks are of a later make and look slightly different with a brighter glossier finish. There is no damage to the pieces and no corrosion, spotting or staining.

The dinner forks are 200mm long, the entree forks 175mm, dessert spoons 174mm, soup spoons 196mm and the cake forks 146mm. The large serving spoon is 222mm. The set weighs 1.43 kilos.

A set of horn, Bakelite or bone handle knives would complete the set.

 For Imperial measurement users a handy guide is 25mm or 2.5cm is a little less than 1 inch, so 100mm or 10cm is just less than 4 inches.

Condition rating.

 

Fair: item has many faults and may include damaged or broken parts. The piece may have a poor repair.  This is my lowest rating and rarely used.

 

Good: item has some noticeable faults but still presents well. The piece will be sound and the faults cosmetic. The piece may have been repaired but will have been done in such manner that it is well disguised. This is a rating I use sometimes and will be used to describe those pieces in our second’s category as well as some others.

 

Very good: the item will show minor wear or scratches commensurate with age but will have no breakages, repairs or damage.  There will be times when a set is described as in very good condition but there may be a few components that are of a lesser rating. Any faults of individual pieces will be described. Most of my items fall into this category.

 

Excellent: the item will be pristine. This will be a new item or one that has been stored from new and never been used. This is my highest rating and is rarely used.
