There are few fruits more prolific and easy to grow than blackberries and the hybrid berries that have been bred from them. These include the boysenberry, hildaberry, Japanese wine berry, loganberry, tayberry, tummelberry, veitch berry and youngberry. All share characteristics of the black berry or raspberry to some degree, and are good for eating fresh when ripe, or for culinary uses.

Planning the crop
Soil preparation and some training are necessary to produce really good yields. Training bushes against a wall or fence will give a good crop without taking up too much space. Grow the plants where they will be in the sun for at least part of the day. They will produce fruit in any soil, but do best in slightly acid soil. Limey soil should be enriched with compost, sieved leaf mould or rotted manure, which will also help to retain moisture during dry weather. Blackberries and hybrids fruit in summer and autumn, depending on the variety. The best fruit is borne on shoots from the previous season. Blackberries are a significant weed in some places because the seed is so easily dispersed by birds. They should not be planted in areas where they are a declared weed. Blackberry hybrids do not cause this problem.
