CENTENARY BULLOO SHIRE - THARGOMINDAH - 1880 - 1980
This scarce book traces the history of the Bulloo Shire and Thargomindah from 1880 to 1980. It was prepared by the staff of the Bulloo Shire Council and made possible due to the assistance in the form of documents and photos from the people of the Shire.
The book covers in depth the history of Bulloo Shire and includes numerous historical sepia coloured photographs throughout. There are photographs of buildings of note, Aboriginal tribes, Hotels, sporting teams, homes, public events, Churches, hospitals, bridges, farming, people, floods, etc.
There is a list of Shire members since inauguration in 1880, Chairman and Shire Clerks. 1860 and the epic expedition of Burke and Wills through Far South-West Queensland paved the way for settlement in the area, the first recorded being the settling of Bulloo Downs by Jones, Sullivan and Moesworth Green in 1864.
Very little can be factually documented from 1860 to 1874, but with the settling of the town area on the Bulloo (corni-Paroo) River, a Town Reserve to be called Thargomindah was gazetted on the 31st December 1874. Soon after, the town of Hungerford, Nocundra, Toompine, Adavale and Eromanga were trading through Thargomindah, developing it as the main business centre.
This development was very much taken into consideration by the central Government, and following the policy of having divisions in the state to administer over local needs and problems, gazetted a Division named the Bulloo Division with headquarters at Thargomindah.
This gazettal was published on the 3rd June 1880, and was the origin of the Bulloo Shire as we know it today.
This is a very scarce book and a wonderful document on the history of the Bulloo Shire Queensland.
PUBLISHER:- Bulloo Shire Council
