New Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology for Dramatically Improved AF Performance for Both Movies and Images
EOS 70D is the first EOS DSLR camera to feature Canon’s newly developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF. This is an innovative phase-difference AF technology on the image sensor plane, employing a revolutionary CMOS sensor on which all effective pixels are able to perform both image capturing and phase-difference AF to achieve dramatically improved AF performance in Live View Shooting and Movie Shooting. In Live View Shooting and Movie Shooting, Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes possible shooting with a feel similar to when shooting through the viewfinder, enabling sharp focus to be obtained across a wide shooting area through phase-difference AF until final focus is achieved. This technology realizes shorter focusing time, exceptional tracking performance and smooth auto-focusing as compared with contrast AF which requires more time on lens adjustment. Users can now focus more attention on the subject and composition when shooting with the LCD monitor to realize more shooting ideas with ease. As up to 103 models of EF/ EF-S Lenses (including earlier models) can take advantage of the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, users can enjoy a new world of fascinating, creative movie and image shooting made possible through various lenses.
Built-in Wi-Fi Function to Unleash More Imaging Possibilities with Remote Shooting
EOS 70D features a built-in Wi-Fi function which supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz band) wireless LAN. By connecting the camera to smart phones wirelessly via the dedicated EOS Remote smart phone application, users can conduct remote Live View shooting from smart phones, making shooting from a distance or challenging angles easier to achieve creative images with greater flexibility. Users can also browse, delete, transfer and rate images directly from their smart phones, bringing greater convenience to shooting and image management.
In addition, this Wi-Fi function facilitates easy and seamless sharing of high quality images and movies captured by EOS 70D, by allowing instant uploading to social networking services such as Facebook, YouTube or Twitter, transferring between Canon digital cameras, or viewing on DLNA -compliant multi-media devices such as high definition TV or tablets over a Wi-Fi wireless network. This function also supports convenient wireless photo printing from printers with PictBridge (DPS over IP) technology.
Creative Features and Image Optimization for Expanded Shooting Possibilities and Fabulous Imaging Expression
EOS 70D incorporates a host of shooting modes and functions that cater to various shooting conditions for expanded creativity, including: the HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode which captures 3 images simultaneously with different exposure settings and merges them into an HDR image in which details in both highlight and shadowed areas are retained; the Multiple Exposure function which superimposes 2 to 9 images to achieve the desired multiple-exposed effect; the Handheld Night Scene mode which reduces handshake dramatically by continuously taking 4 images with faster shutter speeds and combining in-camera into one single image with enhanced brightness; and the HDR Backlight Control mode which facilitates shooting in high contrast scenes to ensure sharp and bright subjects even when shooting with backlighting. In addition,
EOS 70D offers up to 7 built-in Creative Filters including Art Bold, Fish-eye, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera and Miniature effects for more creative inspiration. These effects can be instantly previewed on the LCD monitor when shooting in Live View mode or applied after the image is captured, allowing direct and easy creation of unique images that best express user’s creative vision right from the camera.
EOS 70D is built with a multi touch, vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor featuring 3:2 aspect ratio and 1,040,000-dot resolution for clear viewing and composition, as well as simple and direct operation to unlock a world of creative imaging. The monitor supports intuitive multi touch operation and Touch AF for easy selection of AF point during Live View Shooting and Movie Shooting, delivering professional focusing effect for movies. It also supports a series of multi touch gestures to navigate menus, amend settings, pinch to zoom and swipe to scroll between images during image preview. In addition, the vari-angle monitor features a side-flip design and can rotate 180 degrees forward and 90 degrees backward for easy operation even during vertical shooting or using a tripod. It also helps frame shots from unusual and creative angles, bringing unprecedented freedom in composing shots to make the most out of the camera’s powerful features.
Exceptional Shooting Performance for Superb Image Quality
Incorporating Canon’s advanced optical technologies and powerful shooting performance, EOS 70D promises exceptional quality with high image clarity. It features a 20.2-megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS image sensor with Gapless Microlens technology to improve the light-gathering efficiency of each pixel. Coupled with DIGIC 5+ digital image processor with ultra-fast image processing power, as well as a wide standard ISO range from ISO 100-12800 which is expandable to ISO 25600 for more versatile usage under low light situation, it delivers sharp, detailed images with low noise and rich gradation. Offering high-speed continuous shooting of up to approximately 7fps united with a 19-point cross-type AF system (dual cross at center point f/2.8 sensitive), it realizes fast and accurate auto-focusing for easy capturing of motions and precious moments even when shooting fast moving subjects.
EOS 70D features a large and bright optical viewfinder with 98% coverage and 0.95x magnification to facilitate clear viewing, coupled with a built-in horizontal-axis electronic level for more precise composition ideal for use in occasion where it is hard to determine the horizon with a naked eye. This intelligent viewfinder also offers selectable display of electronic level, focusing points and zones, on-demand grip lines and a spot metering circle, assisting users to achieve accurate composition, focus and exposure with ease. Incorporating an advanced 63-zone dual-layer iFCL (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) metering system which takes focusing point, color and illumination information into account to minimize metering errors caused by varying subject colors and light sources, the camera guarantees precise and ideal exposure results in all lighting conditions.
Professional EOS Movie Shooting with Fast and Smooth Movie Servo AF
EOS 70D supports professional EOS Movie shooting that caters to diverse shooting and post-editing needs. It offers the ability to shoot Full HD (1920 x 1080) movies at selectable frames rates of 24p, 25p or 30p in either IPB (Inter-frame) or ALL-I (Intra-frame) movie compression, according to editing needs and file size consideration. Optional industrial-standard SMPTE Time Code can also be embedded, bringing maximized movie shooting flexibility and professional performance comparable to high end models such as EOS-1D X, EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D. Taking advantage of the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, EOS 70D also delivers quick and accurate Movie Servo AF tracking for continuously smooth focusing during movie shooting, even when filming fast moving subjects. Users can shoot with up to 103 models of EF/EF-S Lenses which were taken advantages by this innovative technology to create high quality movies with more versatile, cinematic imaging expression.
When shooting with any of Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, smooth and quiet continuous AF in movie shooting can be achieved. Through significantly reducing the motor noise from the lens, movies that capture better sound of the scene can be recorded with the built-in stereo microphone. In addition, EOS 70D is equipped with a Manual Sound Recording Level control and an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in the case of a sudden increase in sound level. It also features an accessory jack for external stereo microphones and Video Snapshot mode for adding music in post-editing, expanding further its movie shooting capability.
