Our garage door stopped working one day. I found out that the shaft had broken. People usually buy shafts with gears like this to replace broken plastic gears in their garage doors. Replacing it was not too much of an issue, as I am fairly mechanically-minded and could replace the shaft myself. If you are not a big do-it-yourself-er, then don't buy products like this with no instructions. just call a garage door repair guy or get a new opener. However, this saved us the $100 or so to either get a new opener ar have the guy come in and fix it. So, all-in-all, if you can replace the gears or shaft in your opener yourself, this is a great buy. It is of good quality. However, call your repair guy if you aren't sure you can fix it yourself.

This gear was just what I needed. The old gear was reduced to a pile of white dust inside the garage door control box. If that's what your gear looks like, it's worn out and in need of a replacement. You can learn how on youtube. It's an easy job and will save you quite a bit by doing it yourself. I've seen repairmen not even want to repair this problem and want to take out the old opener and replace the whole thing. The rest of the opener is fine,. Even the work gear is probably just fine. No grease came with this gear. That's my only beef. I had some white Lithium grease and used it. That should be fine. Put the metal plate back on the top of the control box the same way it came off. If you don't, the gear cover won't fit back on. It's the plate with 3 screws.

Prior to purchasing this, I cheaped out and bought just the plastic gear that was worn.As it was half the price at $10. I had a fit trying to remove the old worn gear finally giving up (and I'm stubborn!). I was using a vice, a hammer and other tools and the damn pin that holds the gear in the old unit would not budge. Due to the design of the component, it's hard to get the gear set in a vice. I immediy ordered this and put the project off. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $10 and get this or another complete gear set (not just the plastic gear that gets worn). So much simpler. If you're on the fence about it, see if you can get the worn gear off your broken unit BEFORE making a decision. Only time will tell if this holds up as "good" as OEM, but it appears to be well made. Indistinguishable from OEM in my amateur opinion.Read full review

Between this item and a youtube video I was able to repair my garage door opener. I am not a particularly handy guy but it was simple and understandable. My opener has never worked so well or so quietly. Great product.

This item was an exact fit for the worn out part and with watching related YouTube videos, it was extremely easy to install. However, the satisfaction of doing the repair my self and saving nearly $150 for a new unit was the best bonus of all. My opener works as well as when it was new in 2003!
